Probably obvious, but 'kojam' (koe-zham) is a racial slur for all intents and purposes related to Amka. It has roots in Swathi'vallen language. It relates only to Amka as labor purposed, as moving tools basically and nothing else.

It's the magic word!
While the outright racism isn't surprising (If this is based in the 80s, then I grew up in that decade) considering the recent wars.
I also wonder if his disdain is partially due to Maks' rather...homeless...appearance. If the poor guy is simply able to have a long, hot, shower and some clean clothes that actually fit.
If Maks is scrubbed clean with a good haircut and wearing a well-tailored suit, and he learns that cocky "I am what I am, so deal with it" attitude (walking into every room like you own the place), people may take him more seriously.
It is definitely based in the 80s,right about a 1983 actually.
Someday, hopefully, we'll see a more cleaned up clothes fitting Maks because yes,that absolutely would take him miles beyond...this outfit which has now been hit by a fucking car on top of being I'll fitting and dirty.
